Chris O'Brien Lifehouse Pharmacy Academy

Practical 4-day program

Lifehouse Academy is a practical introduction to oncology pharmacy and is designed for clinical pharmacists who are at the first stages of a role in cancer care, where they will be responsible for the verification, supply and education of cancer treatments to patients. The 4-day program consists of two face-to-face days at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse where they will get an opportunity to shadow cancer care pharmacists, tour day therapy, wards and aseptic suite. The two days of virtual workshops will cover basic oncology/haematology theory and participants will get a chance to practise and hone their skills in the verification of cancer treatment orders. Each round of Lifehouse Academy has a cap of 10 participants which allows for tailored teaching and interactive discussions.

I would highly recommend this training program. It was presented in a clear, systematic way which covered the role of the pharmacist but also what topics/knowledge we should familiarize ourselves with. It is a good mix of theory and practice. Besides the oncology information itself, seeing what the thinking process was like and how to approach learning systematically was very helpful.
This is a program I wished I did when I first went into oncology.
I honestly think this should be part of an accreditation process for Oncology Pharmacists going forward. The profession is always moving towards more specialized skillsets so pharmacists should have a baseline level of training that’s standardized to give consistency to the position.
Excellent program! The open forum style was fantastic in creating an environment to delve into areas and discuss questions. The small number of participants was also great as it gave everyone a chance to participate.
